Week of October 4, 2021
NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place September 15th to
October 15th every year. It is a time to recognize and celebrate
the many varied contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive
histories of the American Hispanic and Latino communities. In
the sixties President Lyndon Johnson, a Texan was the originator of this recognition and in
1988 President Ronald Reagan followed suit by extending the observation to one whole month.
CLASS OF 2022
This year the Senior Class is sponsored by our Social Studies
teachers: Mr. Martinez and Mrs. Wieronski. Last week they had
their inaugural meeting and elected officers for the year. Officers
are as follows: President Pablo Ibarra, Vice-President Jiovanna
Morales, Secretary Josue Porter, and Treasurer Emily Flores.
One of their primary objectives is to instill Cougar Spirit throughout the ranks of our student
body and to raise enough funds to be able to take a fun-filled memory-producing senior trip. A
possible destination for their senior trip is Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio.
COUGARS CRUSH THE RED ANTS
By now if you keep up with what goes on in Santa Maria you are well aware of that the Mighty
Cougars took care of business this past Friday night when they demolished Progreso 46-15.
The win upped their season record to 3 Wins against 2 Losses. Coach Gracia felt that the boys
wanted desperately to redeem themselves after a tough outing against Lyford the week prior
and that they did. The Cougars dominated in all facets of the game as the boys imposed their
will on their opponent and the Red Ants didn't stand a chance. All three facets of the game
(offensive, defensive, special teams units) were on top of their game. The fact that these two
neighbors have finally started to play each other as of late and that many families have
relatives that live and play for Progreso has many in the community viewing them as our new
rival. Since Coach Gracia has been here SMHS has faced Progreso twice and both times have
come out victorious on the scoreboard. Bragging rights for 2021 once again go to Santa
Maria.
